Sylfia has just returned from her grand four month voyage around NZ, Setting sail from the bay of islands in December 2017, the first stop was Great barrier island, then continuing down the east coast while stopping to visit stunning a few stunning spots along the way; Coromandel, White island, Wellington and then Nelson where the family joined for a couple of weeks around new years, we sailed around Golden bay, Able Tasman area and then through the beautiful Marlborough sounds.. Sylfia then carried on south via the west coast with the ‘boys’ on board, keen to get amongst the fiords where there way lots of hunting, fishing and diving to be had. Spending 2 months in the most remote and wild parts in Fiordland has definitely been the highlight, with a few different groups of friends joining for different parts to share the journey.
We then carried on to stewart island, crossing over from the Tasman sea and into the rugged southern ocean around the southern tip of stewart island was an impressive experience too with large swells and currents meeting. The trip back home via the east coast was pretty quick, stopping in Oamaru, Christchurch and Wellington along the way to wait for the weather to be favourable to then carry on north again. and arriving back the bay of islands in April 2018.
It has certainly been another trip of a life time aboard Sylfia which thanks to our late father Bernard we are very grateful to have had the opportunity to sail and share the trip with friends and family. Credit to Sylfia’s study build she performed very well with no major issues, even in the most rugged parts of the country with wild winds of up to 60kts and large rolling swell- everyone on board felt safe!
